How to use your Android phone as a microphone on Windows
No headset, or your laptop's built-in mic sounds bad? The phone in your pocket has a much better microphone. Here's how to use it as a wireless mic for your PC in a few minutes.
Why use your phone as a PC microphone?
- Better sound: phone microphones are made for voice calls and filter out a lot of background noise.
- No extra hardware: no USB mic or headset to buy.
- Wireless: walk around the room while you talk, or keep the phone close to your mouth.
What you need
- A Windows 10 or 11 PC and an Android phone (Android 7.0 or newer).
- The free OwnMic app on both — download it here.
- A free virtual audio cable such as VB-Cable, so every Windows app can use your phone as a mic.
- The same Wi-Fi on both devices — or your phone's hotspot, or a USB cable.
Step by step
1
Install OwnMic and VB-Cable on your PC
Run the OwnMic installer for Windows, then install VB-Cable. VB-Cable adds a new microphone to Windows, and OwnMic plays your phone's voice into it.
2
Install OwnMic on your phone
Install the OwnMic APK and open it. Allow the microphone permission when Android asks.
3
Connect them
With both devices on the same network, your PC appears in the phone app by itself. Tap it and enter the PIN shown on the PC. You only do this once — next time it connects instantly.
4
Pick the microphone in Windows
Open Settings → System → Sound and under Input choose CABLE Output (VB-Audio Virtual Cable). Talk into your phone — the input level moves. That's it.
Wi-Fi, hotspot or USB: which is best?
- Wi-Fi: the easiest. Works anywhere in the house. A 5 GHz network gives the smoothest sound.
- Phone hotspot: no router needed. Turn on the hotspot and connect the PC to it — great at the office, at school or when your Wi-Fi blocks devices from seeing each other.
- USB cable: the steadiest connection with the lowest delay, and your phone charges while you talk. See how to connect with USB.
Tips for the best sound
- Hold or place the phone 15–30 cm (6–12 inches) from your mouth, with the bottom of the phone pointing at you.
- Avoid big downloads on the same Wi-Fi while you're live.
- Use Mute on the phone, the PC, the tray icon or the floating widget whenever you need a moment.
Not working?
- PC not found: check both are on the same network. Some Wi-Fi networks stop devices from seeing each other — use your phone's hotspot instead.
- No sound in other apps: make sure VB-Cable is installed and CABLE Output is chosen as the microphone, in Windows and inside the app you use.

Private by design: your voice goes straight from your phone to your PC on your own network. It never goes through the internet, and you don't need an account.
